Uproar in U'khand assembly for Guv not mentioning Gairsain in
Press Trust of India Dehradun Opposition BJP today created a din in Uttarakhand Assembly on the first day of its budget session criticising Governor K K Paul's address to the House not mentioning the emotive Gairsain issue.
As soon as the House reassembled for the post lunch session, Leader of Opposition Ajay Bhatt, who also heads the state unit of the BJP, rose from his seat to voice his dissatisfaction over Paul leaving the vital Gairsain issue out of his address.
He was followed by the rest of the Opposition members who rose from their seats to express solidarity with Bhatt and slammed the Governor's address for what they termed a "serious act of omission".
Terming the address as a "pack of lies", they spoke in unison against it reminding the state government of its promise to build a Vidhan Bhawan at Gairsain as a preliminary step towards granting the small hill town in Chamoli district the status of a permanent capital and now not even finding it worth a mention in a document which is supposed to sum up its vision for the future.
However, Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal did not pay heed to the protest and completed the listed business of the House for the day by reading a synopsis of the Governor's address in the prevailing din and adjourning the proceedings till tomorrow.
Gairsain is an emotive issue in Uttarakhand with an important section of those who fought for statehood being in favour of its being granted capital status on the plea that it was equi-distant from both Kumaun and Garhwal regions of the state.
Though the Congress government has begun building a Vidhan Bhawan at Gairsain and even held two sessions of the state assembly there in makeshift tents, it is yet to shed its ambiguity over whether or not it would grant it the status of a permanent capital.
Earlier, the budget session of the state Assembly began with Governor's address highlighting steps taken and proposed by the state government towards infrastructure development.
He also spoke about improving rural connectivity, measures to strengthen education and health facilities in villages and to generate self-employment opportunities to stop migration from the hills which has remained a cause of concern for successive governments in the state.
