Urban local bodies poll schedule announced in Himachal

Elections to 52 urban local bodies (municipalities) in Himachal Pradesh would be held in a single phase on January 10.
The elections would be held in 52 local bodies in 29 Municipal Councils and 23 Nagar Panchayats to elect 446 ward members.
Panchayat polls in Kangra district, which was left out in the first phase, would be held on January 10 and 12.
Elections for Shimla and Dharamsala Municipal Corporations would be held later.
The election of Shimla Municipal Councils is due in May 2017 while in Dharamsala, which had been recently upgraded into Municipal Corporation, process of delimitation of wards is under way.
Announcing the election schedule, State Election Commissioner, TG Negi said that filing of nominations would be done on December 26, 28 and 29.

Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on December 30 and the last date of withdrawal is December 31, he said, adding that counting of votes would be taken up immediately after the polling.
The Municipal elections would not be contested on party symbols and voting would be done through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), Negi said.
As many as 950 Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) would be provided for 499 polling booths to be manned by about 3,000 employees including 900 security men.
2,79,870 voters will exercise their franchise.
The model code of conduct has come into force with immediate effect in Kangra district and all the urban local bodies where elections are being held. It would remain in effect till the completion of election process.
The panchayat polls for Kangra district would also be held simultaneously in two phases on January 10 and 12 to elect 55 Zila Parishad members, 383 Panchayat Samiti members, 748 pradhans and UP Pradhan each and 4,682 panchayat members.
As many as 9,364 employees and 4,682 security men would be deployed to ensure free and peaceful polls in each phase and a total number of 11, 22,318 voters including 5,86,996 men and 5,55,322, women would cast their votes.
The panchayat elections for Kangra district would be held in two phases on January 10 and 12.
