"I am amazed by all the transformation that has taken place in the region. This is a fascinating state in a fascinating region. Eastern and Northeast India clearly have exciting futures and great importance to India's regional presence," Powell said in a statement after a 30-minute meeting with the chief minister.
"I had an excellent discussion with the chief minister who shared her vision of revitalising West Bengal. I am very happy to be back in Kolkata.
"This is a quick visit for me. My primary goal is to meet with my team in Kolkata," the ambassador said.
Speaking about Clinton's visit, the statement said, "She has been to Kolkata before, but many years ago. I think this visit will be an opportunity for her to find out first-hand how much this city and eastern India have transformed and what a bright future lies ahead."
US Consul General Dean Thompson and other officials were present at the meeting with the chief minister.
Earlier in the day, Powell also met Governor M K Narayanan. PTI
