The US today strongly condemned the terror attack near Iraq's Hilla city that left nearly 80 people dead, underlining that this assault has strengthened America's resolve to defeat the ISIS.
Many of those killed were pilgrims, including from Iran, returning from commemorating the Shia observance of Arbaeen in the city of Karbala.
"The United States extends its deepest sympathies to the families of the victims, as well as to all of Iraq, for this senseless violence, which was clearly intended to stoke sectarian tensions," said Ned Price, Spokesman of National Security Council, the White House.
"The United States remains steadfast in its partnership with the Iraqi people and government, and this attack only serves to strengthen our resolve in defeating ISIL," Price said.
The State Department Spokesman John Kirby said the US is in close contact with Iraqi authorities, and it stands committed to supporting Iraqi Security Forces as they continue to take the fight to the ISIS and bring to justice those responsible for these despicable crimes.
"We condemn in the strongest possible terms the outrageous terrorist attacks carried out today by Daesh at a service station and restaurant in Hilla, Iraq. Initial reports indicate at least 80 people in total were killed as they were returning from visiting Karbala, many of them as they sat down together for a meal. We extend our deepest condolences to the victims' families and friends, and we wish a full and quick recovery to the many people who were injured," Kirby said.
These murders are yet another example of ISIS's contempt for human life and its efforts to sow discord and division among the Iraqi people, he said.
"Our partnership with Iraq and its people, who serve on the front lines of this global fight, remains steadfast and unwavering," he added.
