US extradites Bosnian wanted for war crimes

United States has extradited a Bosnian national to his Balkan homeland so he can stand trial for alleged war crimes committed during the conflicts of the 1990s.
Sulejman Mujagic was handed over to Bosnian authorities on Friday following an April ruling by a New York federal district court, the US Justice Department said in a statement Monday.
As a platoon commander in the Army of the Autonomous Province of Western Bosnia, Mujagic is accused of torturing and executing a disarmed Bosnian Army soldier and torturing a second on or around March 6, 1995, it said.
The 1992-1995 ethnic war in Bosnia claimed some 100,000 lives and created some two million refugees and displaced persons, almost half of the former Yugoslav republic's pre-war population.

"For the families who lost loved ones during the Bosnian war, justice has been a long time coming but they can take some comfort in knowing that those responsible for this tragedy are now being held accountable for their crimes," said John Morton, director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Mujagic came to the United States in July 1997 and became a permanent resident in March 2001. He was a resident of Utica, New York.
