"I am thrilled to have all of you here for our first-ever Careers in Film Symposium. We never did this before," the First Lady said at the event.
"Just a few days ago, we were doing some Bollywood dancing in the State Dining Room," Michelle Obama said amidst laughter.
She welcomed high school students from Washington DC, New York, and Boston to the White House for a workshop about careers in film and an opportunity to learn about animation, special effects, makeup, costume, directing, music and sound effects, as well as hear from leaders in the film industry about how their education helped them succeed.
"This is the first time that we have brought young people into the White House for an event like this. And we have had students here for workshops on all sorts of things. We've done everything from classical music to spoken word to poetry," she said.
The First Lady said "talent comes and goes, but it's their ability to dig deep when things are hard and make things happen for themselves -- that's the difference between just an average life and success".
