The US has sought additional information from Pakistan on its decision to establish military courts for trial of suspected terrorists as it wants to ensure that due process of law is followed, a senior American official said today.
"We have seen the reports (of the Pakistani parliament passing legislation allowing military courts for trial of suspected terrorists), and we're seeking additional information as the Pakistani government adopts measures necessary to institute them," State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters at her daily news conference.
"We support efforts to counter terrorism and bring perpetrators to justice, but we believe it's important efforts be consistent with principles of due process. We will continue to engage with the government of Pakistan on a range of these issues and seek information on this vote," Psaki said in response to a question.
Asked if seeking additional information means that the US has concerns that in these courts due process of law might not be followed, she said, "We're exploring and looking to receive a little bit more information so we can address or explore that question.
