Amidst speculation that Western powers or Saudi Arabia could intervene in the case of Pervez Musharraf, the US today distanced itself from the issue and said it had "no position" on the legal proceedings initiated against the former military ruler.

The US Embassy spokesperson said the "United States takes no position on the return of former President Pervez Musharraf or the legal proceedings against him".

"This is an issue to be resolved solely in accordance with Pakistan's Constitution and laws. The US reaffirms that it is backing democracy in Pakistan, and does not support any particular political party or individual candidate," the spokesperson said in a statement.
