The use of technology in making public transport safer for passengers was emphasised at a two-day conference on safer taxi operations in India that was attended by stakeholders from various agencies.
Experts at the 'National Code of Conduct for Taxi and Public transport' conference organised by Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), in partnership with Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, also discussed about sensitising taxi drivers on how to conduct themselves with passengers.
"The code for taxi and auto drivers should stress more on their unruly predatory behaviour. Most of them misbehave with passengers and park cabs in bus lanes.
"The new Motor Vehicle Act on the anvil will help taming of these public transport drivers in a big way," said Garima Bhatnagar, joint commissioner of police (Traffic).
Some of the recommendations made by the experts at the conference included installing of dashboard cameras in public transport, disabling of child locks in backseats of cabs, panic button at backseat, use of voice enabled apps, mechanical training to drivers, and thorough knowledge of topography of area.
