In memory of former Indian football team captain V P Sathyan, a coaching school titled 'V P Sathyan Soccer School', would be launched in this soccer crazy city on November 24.
"It was Sathyan's dream to start such a school for training kids," Anitha Sathyan, widow of Sathyan, told PTI today.
After seven years of his demise in 2006, Anitha came forward to set up the school to fulfill the dream of the footballer, who had enthralled soccer fans across the country.
In the first batch, 20 kids would be given training by expert coaches to make them good players, she said.
Initially they propose to adopt students from Promotion and Education Trust (SEPT) footballers, an organisation here to promote sports development in the country with focus on football.
Sathyan, who was a key member of Kerala police team that won back-to-back Federation Cup titles in 1989-90, 1990-91 had led the state to Santhosh Trophy triumph in 1992. He had first played for India in 1985 SAF Games in Dhaka and had represented India in Merdekka tournament and Asian Games in 1986.
Sathyan had led India in the World Cup qualifiers in 1991, in the 1993 Nehru Cup in Chennai, in the 1994 Independence Cup in Doha and was captain of the gold medal winning team in 1995 SAF Games in Chennai.
Former international football players including I M Vijayan, Joe Paul Ancheri, K P Sethumadhavan and C V Pappachan are expected to attend the function.
