MDMK chief Vaiko today requested Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to adopt a resolution in the state Assembly on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, similar to the one adopted two years ago.
The 2011 resolution called for economic sanctions to be imposed on Sri Lanka till Tamils in the island nation were ensured status on par with the majority Sinhalese.
In a statement, Vaiko suggested that the new resolution be on demanding removal of armed forces and police personnel from Tamil areas in the Island besides insisting on conducting a general referendum in Lanka and for the Tamil diaspora living elsewhere in the world.
He also wanted the resolution to demand an independent international probe into the alleged human rights violations by Sri Lanka and insists on UN's direct assistance for affected Tamils.
