The ashes of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee were immersed in the Alaknanda river at Badrinath in Uttarakhand today by BJP leaders amid vedic hymns.
BJP state president Ajay Bhatt, party national secretary Tirath Singh Rawat and MLA Mahendra Bhatt among others were present at the Brahma Kapal Gandhi Ghat from where the ashes were immersed in the river.
The hymns were recited by teerth purohits in the presence of Badrinath-Kedarnath temple committee officials as the urn containing the ashes of the departed leader were lowered into the river.
The immersion procession, which had started from Dehradun on Friday halted for the night at Joshimath and left for Badrinath this morning.
It arrived at the Himalayan shrine a little behind schedule as the road was blocked at Lambagad due to a landslide.
State Finance Minister Prakash Pant, who was also part of the procession, had to return from Lambagad.
