Varsity refuses to recall decision to rusticate two students

The Ravenshaw University authorities today refused to recall their decision to rusticate two undergraduate students for throwing bombs at the office of the vice-chancellor, despite protest by a group of students.
"The decision to rusticate the two students was taken after the recommendation of the Staff Council and as of now there is no proposal to annul the decision," vice-chancellor Prof B C Tripathy said.
A number of students continued to stage a 'dharna' in front of the VC's office for the second day today in protest against the decision, which they claimed was taken hastily without proper inquiry.
The university had on Monday rusticated two students -- a third-year BCom student and a first-year BSc student -- for two years and debarred them from appearing in four consecutive semester examinations after they were found guilty of hurling at least five bombs at the office of the vice-chancellor late on Sunday night causing extensive damage.

The two were accompanied by another youth, who was refused admission this year for his misconduct, as per the Staff Council.
After rusticating the two students, the university authorities yesterday handed over the matter to police, who are yet to make any arrest.
