Union Rural Development Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh today took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi and said when the latter was given the leadership, his party's tally came down to 44 from 206, drawing sharp reaction from Congress.
"When Rajiv Gandhi was leading the party, Congress got more than 400 seats in Lok Sabha polls. When Rahul Gandhi was given the leadership, the party's tally came down to 44 from 206.
"When we compare the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, then there is a vast difference between the two. We should remember Congress came to power in a number of states when Rajivji led the party. When Rahul took over Congress lost state after state," Singh told PTI.
A former Congress leader from Haryana, Singh had switched sides after the Lok Sabha polls and became a Union Minister.
Reacting sharply to it, Congress suggested that Singh is being "ungrateful" after "getting so much from Congress" in last three decades.
"It was the same Rahul Gandhi, who made him the Finance Minister in Haryana government in 2005. Then he was made AICC General Secretary. And after he lost in Lok Sabha polls, he was made a Rajya Sabha MP. But he suddenly joined the BJP. He started liking Modiji due to his vested interests.
"Congress has given him so much and then suddenly he tilted to the BJP. That is unfortunate," party spokesman Vijay Inder Singla told reporters reacting to Singh's remarks.
Another Congress spokesperson, RPN Singh, advised the Rural Development Minister to look after his ministry rather than focussing on others. "Look after your ministry. You do not know what is happening in ministry and commenting on other parties," Congress leader Singh said.
