A bandh called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) today affected normal life in Mango area here where prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC have been clamped following a clash between two communities over an eve-teasing incident.
Bandh supporters demanding arrest of those responsible for the eve-teasing last night put up road blockades and set fire to tyres in the middle of roads disrupting traffic for hours, police said.
Small groups of both the communities gathered at different places but the police prevented them from coming close, a police officer said adding senior district officials were camping at trouble torn Mango.
There were reports that police used tear gas shells and fired in the air to disperse the groups, but there are no official confirmation.
The situation is tense but under control and adequate security arrangements have been made to maintain law and order, Commissioner of Kolhan Division, Arun, told PTI.
"We are keeping vigil on the situation," he said adding that no culprits responsible for the situation will be spared.
