The state VHP leadership today organized "Astra Puja' (weapon worship) at more than 300 places in the state as part of Vijay Dashami celebrations.
"Vijay Dashami marks the victory of good over evil. Today, in order to unite the Hindus and protect them against the anti-national elements, we have organized Astra Puja in more than 300 places of the state," VHP state secretary Sachindranath Singha told PTI.
He added that the Astra Puja was organised mostly indoors and no armed rallies were taken out in any part of the state.
"Such programmes are being held in the country for years," he said.
Singha also said that Astra Puja in Bengal has a special meaning and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) used to organise such events on this day on earlier occasions also.
The Trinamool Congress yesterday said any attempt to create division among masses will not be tolerated.
"The RSS, VHP and the BJP for the last few years have been trying to polarise the state communally, but they have failed. Everybody has the right to organise religious programmes but our government will not tolerate any attempt to create division among communities," a senior Trinamool Congress leader said on condition of anonymity yesterday.
