Vice Chancellor Urges to Promote Organic Farming

: In a bid to propagate healthy food habits, Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) Vice Chancellor, Dr B Madhusoodana Kurup stressed the need for stimulating organic farming practices in agriculture and aquaculture sectors.
Addressing the media in connection with the 6th edition of India International Food and Agri Expo to be conducted at KUFOS from Oct 30, Dr Kurup expressed serious concern over excessive use of pesticides and chemicals in agriculture.
People are increasingly becoming victims of lifestyle diseases mainly due to the unhealthy eating habits followed today.
Organic farming or the organic food products is the only available alternative to overcome the situation, he said.

The five-day exhibition and workshops will focus on promoting organic farming practices. It consists of India organic fair and various technical sessions including workshop on organic crop Production, organic spices, organic fruits, organic aquaculture, value addition of organic products and best practices in Animal Husbandry.
The world organic production with certification covers 38 million Hectares. Having the largest number of certified organic farmers of around six lakhs, India has to play a vital role in this area, he said.
The world market for organic products is 64 billion US Dollars. This unique exhibition cum -workshop is organized for the benefit of the rural farming community, agribusiness sector, food processing industry and for promoting small farmer entrepreneurship and rural development.

The exhibitors will include Central, State Government Departments, Organizations, Food Processors, Producer Companies, NGOs, Traders, Farmers, Farmer Organizations, Agri Entrepreneurs among others.
