A video clip, which went viral on the social media, purportedly showed police thrashing people who lost their cool after failing to get demonetised currency exchanged at a bank in the district today.
Police are seen beating the people with canes and belts outside the State Bank of India branch in Porsa tehsil, about 43 km from here, in the video clip doing the rounds on WhatsApp.
The trouble started when people, standing in a queue for hours, tried to force entry into the branch at around 3 PM. They were apparently angry because a policeman on duty allowed some persons inside through the back-door, an eyewitness said.
Police pushed them out and beat them with canes and belts, the clip shows.
"No one has approached us with a complaint yet. But I am going to look into the incident and if the policemen are found guilty they will be punished," District Superintendent of Police Vineet Khanna told PTI.
Additional police personnel were deputed at the branch subsequently, he said, adding that people suddenly tried to create disorder and police pushed them outside the branch to bring the situation under control.
