Grandmaster and highest rated Indian Vidit Gujrathi today suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Norwegian talent Aryan Tari in the sixth round of World Junior Chess Championship now underway here at the Hyatt.
Gujrathi missed upon an excellent chance with white pieces, could not spot an immediate win in one move and instead ended up making a blunder to let Tari turn the tables immediately. The loss proved costly for Gujrathi (3.5 points) as he will now have to make a big comeback in the premier championship for players' under-20 years of age.
The Queen's Indian defense worked well for Gujrathi as he went for a principled continuation and got excellent attack against a centralised black king. Even as Tari was able to walk his king to safety, Gujrathi came with a fine exchange sacrifice that increased the pressure and the Indian was doing pretty well till disaster struck. It was all over in just one move.
On the brighter side for the hosts, Grandmaster Sahaj Grover showcased his deep preparation to get an easy draw as black against third seed Wei Yi of China. It was a French defense wherein Grover got his home preparation till move 23 in the Tarrasch variation when it was already rook and pawns endgame on board and it was just a matter of finding few right moves thereafter.
S L Narayanan inched towards his Grandmaster norm by getting another easy draw against formidable opposition. The Indian also remained in joint lead on five points after sharing the point with top seed Vladimir Fedoseev of Russia.
Narayanan stayed in front with Lu Shanglei of China and Jorge Cori of Peru after a draw between them. Mikhail Antipov of Russia joined the three leaders disposing Paulo Bersamina of Philippines after a complicated struggle.
Grover shares the fifth spot along with Bai Jinshi of China, Benjamin Bok of Holland, Grigoriy Oparin of Russia, Karen Grigoryan of Armenia, Ulvi Bajarani of Azerbaijan, Wei Yi, Fedoseev and Tari with all having 4.5 points apiece in their kitty.
