Unseeded Prenamallur Vignesh of Andhra Pradesh stunned third seed Manish Sureshkumar of Tamil Nadu in two straight sets to enter the men's singles final of the Rs 22-lakh JVPG Anirudh Desai All India Open Tennis tournament today.
Vignesh subdued his much younger opponent Manish 6-3, 6-2 to earn a shot in tomorrow's final against seventh seed Siddharth Vishwakarma of Chhattisgarh who beat back a late challenge from fourth seed Kunal Anand of Delhi 6-2, 7-6(4) in the other semi final.
The 30-year-old Vignesh, ranked 30th in the country, was in his element and quashed the aspirations of the 18-year-old Sureshkumar, ranked 17th, who was unable to put up a fight and caved in rather meekly.
In the second semi-final, Vishwakarma too comfortably defeated his Delhi rival Anand in straight sets after trailing 2-4 in the second set tie-breaker before reeling off five successive points to clinch the set and the match.
Top seed Mahak Jain of MP and no. 6 seed Humera Shaikh of Telengana will contest the women's singles final, also scheduled for tomorrow.
In the women's semis, Mahak tamed fourth seed Nithyaraj Baburaj of Tamil Nadu 6-0, 6-3 while Humera advanced to the final without getting on the court as her opponent Mihika Yadav of Maharashtra did not report for the match as she is unwell.
