Villagers clash with police in Giridih, 14 injured

At least 14 persons, including policemen, were today injured in a clash between police personnel and villagers during Ram Navami procession at a village, 70 km from the headquarters town of Giridih, police said.
"Some people from the procession hurled stones at the police men, and the police fired shots in the air to disperse the mob at a village under Birni police station," Deputy Superintendent of Police R K Mehta, who was among the injured, said.
Sub-divisional officer P K Mandal, Birni police station in-charge Rana Pratap, nine other policemen and two villagers were injured in the clash, he added.
Deputy Commissioner Deep Prabha Lakra said gun shots were first fired from the side of the procession, forcing the police to fire warning shots in the air.
It is not immediately known whether the two villagers suffered injuries from stones or bullets, police said.
