Scores of irate villagers today manhandled the Additional District Magistrate and ransacked the Collectorate here for alleged inaction by the authorities in a case of dowry death.
The villagers were angry as no arrest was made in a three-month-old case in which a woman allegedly committed suicide even after a dowry case was registered against her husband along with four others.
The victim's family along with other villagers vandalised the Collectorate in Pilkhuwa village here, while the victim's father attempted suicide in front of the office by pouring kerosene on himself, police said.
The villagers also attacked other officials of the collectorate and even tried to snatch rifles of the ADM's security guards, they said.
Upon receiving information, police rushed to the spot and resorted to mild lathi-charge. Later, 100 people, including women, were taken into custody.
A case has been registered against 200 people for attempt to murder and other relevant sections of the IPC, police said, adding, twelve people have been named in the FIR.
A magisterial probe has been ordered into the incident.
Hapur Superintendent of Police Himanshu Kumar said that Pilkhuwa police station's in-charge Sanjay Tyagi has been suspended for negligence and the matter is being investigated.
