A police outpost was today set afire by a mob protesting against "illegal" detention of a villager in Etah district.
The incident took place after some policemen allegedly thrashed a man named Mukesh of Gopalpur village on a complaint by his wife, police sources said.
To protest against the police action, villagers gathered at Lipton police outpost and set it afire. They also burnt two two-wheelers and some important documents kept there, police claimed.
The police had to resort to lathicharge to control the mob, which indulged in brickbatting and damaging vehicles of passersby.
Heavy force has been deployed in the area to check any untoward incident.
