Marking the end of 10-day Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations across Tamil Nadu, thouands of idols of Lord Ganesha were immersed in the sea at various places today.
Barring a stray incident of stone throwing at Muthupettai in Tiruvarur District, in which none was injured, the celebrations went off peacefully across the state, police said.
In Chennai, over 1,500 Ganesha idols were immersed today amid tight security.
Idols in various sizes and styles installed by Hindu Munnani, besides other voluntary groups and outfits, were taken out in processions and immersed at five designated spots, including Neelankarai beach in the suburbs.
Traffic snarls were witnessed in some places along the procession routes.
Over 18,000 police personnel were deployed across the city and 10 cameras were installed to monitor the procession routes.
