Sir Vince Cable todayannounced thathe is standing toreplace Tim Farron, who stepped down as Liberal Democrat leader.
The 74-year-old former business secretarysaid he is ready to lead the party through a period of "chronic uncertainty" as he claimed the "political winds are moving in our favour".
Announcing his candidacy on the Lib Dem Voice website, Vince said: "With 20 years on the national political stage I am passionate as ever about our liberal values."
"I am ready to commit my energy, enthusiasm and experience to the task of leading the Liberal Democrats through what will be a period of chronic uncertainty," he added.
Vince said that there is a "big space in British politics" which he is "determined" for the Lib Dems to occupy.
The Liberal Democrats are facing their second hunt for a new leader in two years following Farron's resignation over conflict between his faith and political career.
