"It is bizarre...These incidents are absolutely outrageous. This is a deep-rooted malice in our society and we have to stop behaving like ostriches and address the problem," he said in a statement.
Gen Singh, who has served as the Eastern Army Commander, said, "Unless we as a people learn to understand and respect each other, these absolutely shameful incidents will continue to happen."
As the Eastern Army Commander, Gen Singh had initiated work on the Northeast Trilogy, a set of three books that through photographs and carefully researched text had documented the various tribes and the people of the region.
Singh extended condolences to the family of Nido Tania and said the authorities must realise the magnitude of the problem and rise above petty politics.
