Filmmaker Alankrita Shrivastava says the violence of a "monstrous patriarchal society" in the country is going full guns blazing against the women.

The "Lipstick Under My Burkha" director's post on Twitter alluded to the cases of Kathua, Unnao and Surat rapes and said it was "sickening" how the modern Indian society had turned against the women.

"The level of anti-women sentiment in this country, at this moment is sickening. The arrogance and violence of a monstrous patriarchal society is in full force. Trying to gag the voices that dare to whisper a few words in defence of a woman's right to life, liberty and dignity.

"Interesting that those who protest against crimes are being targeted. While those who commit them are being sheltered. Wonder what is going on... #India2018," Shrivastava wrote.

In Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, an eight-year-old child from a minority nomadic community was allegedly held in captivity in a small village temple for a week in January this year during which she was kept sedated and sexually assaulted before being bludgeoned to death.

Eight persons, including a juvenile, were arrested in the case. The trial in the case began on Monday. In Uttar Pradesh's Unnao, a teenage girl alleged that she was raped by a ruling BJP MLA who has been arrested by the CBI, which is probing the case.

In Surat, the body of a girl, who could be between nine and 11 years of age, was found recently with doctors believing that she was possibly held captive, tortured and raped over a period of time.
