Committed to follow Gandhian values, joint opposition candidate for Vice President's post Gopalkrishna Gandhi has used a simple means of campaign--a postcard--for an appeal to the Members of Parliament.
In his appeal sent through a 50-paisa postcard carrying a Gandhi stamp, Gopalkrishna Gandhi asked members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha to consider his suitability for the high office but did not ask for their vote.
Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, has said that his resolve will be to serve people without fear or favour and that the Constitution will be his master and guide.
"A number of political parties and individuals having proposed my name for election as the country's vice president, I am standing for that high office. I seek your consideration of my suitability for it," he said in his appeal.
"My resolve will be to serve the people of India without fear or favour, in association with you, and other honourable members of Parliament.
"And my master and guide will be the Constitution of India," he said in his three-para open appeal to all the MPs who comprise the electoral college for the vice presidential election. The electoral college comprises 790 MPs including nominated members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
Gandhi is pitted against NDA's M Venkaiah Naidu, who resigned as Union Minister after his selection by the BJP for the vice president's poll.
The election will be held on August 5.
