Celebrating 20 years of the passage of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995, scores of disabled people participated in a "Walk to Freedom" at Amar Jawan Jyoti here today.
The walk, organized by National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) on the occasion of World Disability Day, was flagged off by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi.
"Twenty years is a long journey, and many significant milestones have been achieved due to this Act. But we need to alert our policy makers that we too are vigilant, and we will not allow for stagnation. Our fight will continue," said Javed Abidi, Honorary Director, NCPEDP.
Those who participated in the walk included wheel-chair bound people, the blind walking with the help of sticks, among others.
National Association of Blind and National Association of Deaf also joined hands in the walk.
"The walk at India Gate was aimed at showcasing the strength of the disability movement in India, compelling our national policy stakeholders to take action, and affirming that we cannot and will not be overlooked," Abidi said.
