DC(Southwest) Rashid Munir Khan said the man, who is allegedly involved in 25 cases of murder and dacoity, was involved in extortion at Haridevpur area and had clashed with another gang in the area last night.
He was arrested by the police and was snatched away by about 100 of his accomplices, who surrounded the police van, into which he was put.
The snatchers also manhandled the policemen and in the melee the miscreant escaped.
