Ava Duvernay says she was focusing on diversity when she was finalising the cast of her upcoming film "A Wrinkle in Time".
The 45-year-old director said she wanted her main lead, Meg Murray (played by Storm Reid) to have brown skin and three Mrs to be "black, white and someone who wasn't either" as well as different sizes, faiths and ages.
"A Wrinkle..." follows Meg, her brother and her best friend as they cross space in an attempt to find her missing father, a physicist with some extraordinary information and how three astral travellers Mrs Which (Oprah Winfrey), Mrs Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon) and Mrs Who (Mindy Kaling) help them out.
"I wasn't just casting for actresses. I was casting for leaders-icons. Reese is the hottest producer in town. Oprah's the most prolific, venerable legend of television and an artist and entrepreneur. And Mindy's one of the few women running a show with her name, about her.
"When I think about the three of them together as a unit of celestial beings, it feels right," DuVernay told Time magazine.
The Disney sci-fi adventure film is based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Madeleine L'Engle.
