A local court today sentenced a 35-year-old watchman to life imprisonment for killing an elderly woman in 2011 in the Kashimira locality of the district.
Thane Additional Sessions Judge V V Bambrade also convicted Nareshkumar Bagdi under sections 392 (robbery) and 452 (house-tress-pass after preparation for hurt) of the IPC and sentenced him to two and one year imprisonment, respectively. All the sentences will run concurrently.
The judge in his verdict relied on the circumstantial evidence and evidence of the key witness, one of the colleagues of Bagdi, who spotted him after the killing.
Additional Public Prosecutor Ruma Navle informed the court that the victim Shalaka Pardeshi (65) lived with her daughter Aparna in a private housing complex, where Bagdi worked as a watchman.
Knowing the occupants, the watchman used to frequently visit Pardeshi to assist her, Navle said.
The prosecution said on March 14, 2011, the accused entered her house and brutally stabbed Pardeshi to death and decamped with a golden chain after ransacking the house.

Bagdi jumped out of the house from the grill but sustained injuries in the process. One of the labourers working in the neighbouring house rang the bell, but as he did not get any response, he opened the door and found Pardeshi lying in a pool of blood, the court was told.
Bagdi's colleague saw him limping while he was getting out of the complex, the court was informed.
A golden chain and a knife was seized from Bagdi's possession by the police and this helped us to prove the case against him, the Additional Public Prosecutor said.
