Water in Sardar Sarovar dam at record high
Press Trust of India Vadodara For the first time in its history, the Sardar Sarovar Dam across Narmada river at Kevadiya in neighbouring Narmada district, about 90 kms from here, started overflowing at the level of 131.05 metres at about 5.00 PM, executive director of the dam N T Mathew said.
The highest level of water at the dam earlier was 129.5 metres (July 29, 2013), Mathew told PTI over phone.
The water may rise further before it starts receding, Mathew said.
The dam is overflowing because of the heavy rains in catchment areas of Madhya Pradesh, he said. The submersible bridge at Gora near Sardar Sarovar site has gone underwater and been closed to the traffic.
Earlier in the day, authorities said that more than 5,000 people in south Gujarat districts of Bharuch and Narmada had been shifted to safer places in view of the overflowing reservoir.
