Water levels at 90 reservoirs equal last year's mark

Over 90 important reservoirs in the country have equalled the water storage levels of the corresponding period of last year, the Water Resources Ministry today said.
According to a statement here, water available in 91 important reservoirs of the country as on May 21, 2015, was 44.92 BCM, which is 28 per cent of total storage capacity of these reservoirs.
"This storage is 100 per cent of the storage of corresponding period of last year and 135 per cent of storage of average of last ten years. The present storage position during current year is equal to the storage position of last year but is better than the storage of average of last ten years," the statement said.
CWC monitors live storage status of these reservoirs on weekly basis.
The total storage capacity of these reservoirs is 157.799 BCM, which is about 62 per cent of the storage capacity of 253.388 BCM which is estimated to have been created in the country, the statement added.
The statement also said that Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are having better storage than last year for corresponding period.
States having lesser storage than last year for corresponding period are Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, the statement added.
