Water storage in 73 important reservoirs in the country, monitored by the Central Water Commission (CWC), is less in comparison with their corresponding figures for the period last year.
However, water storage in 18 other important reservoirs located in northern and central region was better compared to the last year as well as previous ten years.
As per an official statement issued by Ministry of Water Resources, the total water storage in 15 reservoirs in the eastern region, comprising Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Tripura, was 10.98 BCM as on September 3, which is 58 per cent of their total storage capacity.
The storage during corresponding period of last year was 67 per cent, while average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 64 per cent of the storage capacity of these reservoirs.
"Thus, storage during current year is less than the corresponding period of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period," the statement said.
In western region which comprises Gujarat and Maharashtra, there are 27 reservoirs under CWC monitoring, whose present storage is 59 per cent of the total storage capacity of these reservoirs.

"The storage during corresponding period of last year was 70 per cent and average storage of last ten years during corresponding period was 72 per cent of live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Thus, storage during current year is less than the storage of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years," the statement said.
As far as the southern states are concerned, where there are 31 reservoirs under CWC's monitoring, the total storage available in these reservoirs is 33 per cent.
The storage during corresponding period of last year was 67 per cent and average storage of last ten years was 75 per cent of storage capacity of these reservoirs.
"Thus, storage during current year is less than the corresponding period of last year and is also less than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period," the statement said.
The collective water storage available in 91 important reservoirs of the country was 92.922 BCM, which is 59 per cent of total storage capacity of these reservoirs.
"This storage is 84 per cent of the storage of corresponding period of last year and 84 per cent of storage of average of last ten years," the statement said.
"Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana (two combined project in both states) Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are having lesser storage than last year for corresponding period," the statement said.
