WB Krishi Viswavidyalaya Laws Bill passed
Press Trust of India Kolkata The West Bengal Krishi Viswavidyalaya Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2014 was today passed in the state Assembly to help amend the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya Act, 1974 and Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya Act, 2000 for the development of agriculture and advancement of research and education on it.
Speaking about the bill, state's Agriculture Minister Purnendu Basu said these universities would now provide appropriate technical support and consultative advice to the state government in their activities in agricultural development.
With their expansion, it has been considered necessary and expedient to empower both these universities to establish or affiliate new colleges providing degree in agriculture and allied sciences, Basu said.
The Bill would also help re-structure the executive council of the universities, besides modifying the provision for appointment of Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor, with a provision of their removal from their respective offices, the minister said.
Even as opposition CPI(M) member Anisur Rahaman brought in a number of amendments to the Bill, the minister did not accept any of them. The Bill was passed by voice vote.
