The Vice-Chancellor of West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences Prof P Ishwara Bhat today resigned from his post citing health and family reasons.
His resignation follows demonstrations by the students' association demanding the V-C put in his papers by 9 am today.
The students, under the banner 'Students Juridical Association', alleged that under the tenure of Bhat, there has been no coordination between students and the management, no dialogue and an overall decline in academic standards.
In his mail to the Chancellor, Supreme Court Chief Justice Deepak Mishra, Bhat said, "It has been a great honour and privilege to serve this Univerity which I have done with full sincerity, in accordance with law and to the best of my ability."
Another general body member said, "Now, since the V-C has resigned, we demand a new search committee be formed to elect a new V-C. The next EC will be meeting on April 7 which we hope will start the process."
