Congress today urged upon Governor M K Narayanan for an impartial investigation into the alleged involvement of Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in a murder case and appealed him to direct the state government not to harass the minister.
A party delegation led by PCC president Pradip Bhattacharya and senior leaders Manas Bhuniya, Abdul Mannan and party MPs Mannan Hussain and Abhijit Mukherjee met the Governor and sought his immediate intervention in the matter.
Earlier, a protest demonstration was also held at the Esplanade area, which was attended by Shakeel Ahmed Khan, AICC co-observer of the party's affairs in the state and other leaders, where they condemned the ruling Trinamool Congress' "move to corner the Congress in the state" and demanded withdrawal of the arrest warrant against Chowdhury.
"We urge you to get the current situation investigated impartially. We also request you to instruct the state administration not to harass Chowdhury, which may cause unrest among Congress workers," a memorandum signed by Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the state Assembly Md Sohrab said.
Describing Chowdhury's arrest warrant in connection to a murder case as a conspiracy by TMC, Sohrab said it was an attempt to curb Chowdhury's political influence in Murshidabad district.
"The erstwhile Left Front government also resorted to similar strategy to curb his political influence in the state. Now the present ruling party is also going ahead and framing criminal charges against him," he said.
Strongly criticising the Trinamool Congress, Sohrab alleged that the ruling party was trying to put Chowdhury behind bars ahead of the general elections due next year.
