West Bengal today celebrated the Bhasha Diwas, International Mother Language Day, to mark the linguistic diversity and richness in our country.
Several programmes were organised across the state to mark the day. A function was jointly organised by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and the state government at the Deshyapriya Park here this evening.
Mayor Sovan Chatterjee and West Bengal Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee were in attendance at the event.
Several non-governmental organisations too observed the Diwas through various cultural programmes.
The day is observed worldwide for creating awareness of cultural diversity, linguistics and multilingualism. The UNESCO first took the initiative to celebrate the Bhasha Diwas in 1999.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier laid the foundation stone for the Bhasha Shahid Memorial Monument at Indira Uddyan off Chowringhee Road in Central Kolkata.
Well known artist and Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Jogen Chowdhury will build the Memorial Monument in a year's time, a government official said.
