Mitra, who is now in hospital, was granted bail by ACJM (in-charge) of Alipore District and Sessions Court Partha Das on condition that he would furnish a bond of Rs two lakh, cannot leave the state, submit his passport and cooperate with the investigation process.
Moving the bail plea, Mitra's counsel Ashok Mukherjee told the court that CBI was seeking the defendant's further stay in jail as they felt that he was a prominent person and might influence when granted bail.
CBI counsel told the court that the concerned investigation officer was not in station for which the case diary cannot be produced before the court and hence would not be able to take part in the hearing.
The judge said probe into economic crimes is based on documents and Mitra getting out on bail would not have any influence on the investigation. He then granted bail to Mitra, who was arrested on December 12 last year.
