West Bengal native arrested in Vile Parle rape & murder case

The city police have arrested a man from West Bengal for the rape and murder of a 24 years old physiotherapist in suburban Vile Parle about two months ago.
A police release here identified the accused as Debashish Dhar (27) who worked at a jewellery making unit. He was arrested by Mumbai police team from Methinipur in West Bengal.
On December 6 last year the victim's body was found in her house in Vile Parle. She was naked with a pair of jeans around her neck. The culprit had tried to burn the body by setting on fire books, clothes and some other material in the room.
Her parents lived in the adjacent house. Autopsy revealed that she had been raped and strangled.
Police spotted a man roaming around the area suspiciously on the night of the incident in CCTV footage, questioned a lot of people and after more than fifty days, identified the man as Debashish Dhar who they learnt had left for his home in West Bengal after the incident.
During the interrogation he confessed to the crime, said senior inspector Lakshman Chavan.

Dhar allegedly told police that he worked in the same area and had seen the victim many times.
On the night of the incident, he saw her returning to her house alone. As she left the door open, he entered and strangled her with a pair of jeans after raping her, police said.
Further probe is on.
