Large parts of Gangetic West Bengal, including the metropolis and western districts of the state, continued to sizzle under heatwave conditions today, as the weather office did not hold out any hope of respite soon.
While the highest temperature in the region was 43.5 degrees Celsius at Sriniketan in Birbhum district, Kolkata experienced a maximum of 40.1 degrees, five notches above normal, according to Met department sources.
Despite being the first working day of the week, roads and other busy places were not as crowded as usual, given the scorching weather condition that has been continuing for more than a week.
The nights too offered little respite with the minimum temperature hovering around 29 degrees Celsius.
The situation may get worse with the weatherman forecasting an increase in day temperatures by one or two degrees Celsius in the coming couple of days.
