Western command celebrates Infantry Day

To pay respect to the valiant soldiers who laid down their lives defending the nation, Western Command today celebrated the Infantry Day at the War Memorial of Chandimandir Cantonment near here.
A solemn wreath laying ceremony was conducted at the 'Veer Smriti' where Lt Gen Gurdeep Singh, AVSM, Chief of Staff laid the wreath to pay homage to the gallant martyrs who laid down their lives defending the Nation, a defence spokesman said.
On the occasion, serving Infantry officers got an opportunity to interact with the veterans living in and around Chandigarh at the headquarters of Western Command here.
October 27 is celebrated as Infantry Day by the Indian Army as it was on this day that an Infantry Company of the First Battalion of the Sikh Regiment was airlifted from Delhi to Srinagar to liberate Kashmir from the invading tribals who were supported by Pakistan Army.
Maj Somnath Sharma of the Kumaon Regiment won the first Paramvir Chakra (Posthumously) during these operations in the Battle of Badgam.
During the Kargil Operations of 1999, Infantry yet again played the leading role in beating back the Pakistani aggression reclaiming the occupied heights, the spokesman said.
