The body of a whale shark belonging to the critically endangered species was washed ashore at Panambur beach here.
Life guards noticed the dead shark at the beach and informed the coastal security force. The 10 foot long shark was of very young age, Chief Executive Officer of Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project Yatish Baikampady said.
It might have floated offshore after its death in sea, he said.
As the shark could not be moved, the life guards with the help of locals made a pit in the beach and buried it.
The cause of the death of the whale shark is not yet known. It had no external injuries, officials said.
