"Earlier today, WhatsApp users globally had trouble accessing the app for about an hour. This issue has been fixed and we apologise for the inconvenience," a WhatsApp spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
A section of WhatsApp users complained of an outage in service for a brief period this afternoon and were unable to send or receive messages, according to posts on various social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook.
India is home to over 200 million WhatsApp users. The Facebook-owned messaging platform has more than one billion users globally.
Users turned to platforms like Facebook and Twitter to vent out their frustration at not being able to use the service with '#WhatsAppDown' beginning to trend.
