A wheel in the century-old Pamban cantilever railway bridge broke Tueday leading to cancellation of train services from this holy island, officials said.
The wheel gave away this evening, they said adding maintenance work was underway.
A Southern Railway press release said train number 16852 RameswaramChennai Egmore Express scheduled to leave at 5.40 p.m has been partially cancelled between Rameswaram and Mandapam in view of "urgent maintenance work".
It would leave Mandapam station at 9 p.m, the release added.
The bridge connecting Rameswaram to the mainland suffered a snag last month when an iron rope snapped, affecting movement of ships through it.
The Scherzer span, named after the German engineer William Donald Scherzer, is a rolling lift that helps the bridge open up to allow ships to pass.
Constructed in one of the most corrosive environments of the world, the bridge needs continuous maintenance of its metallic parts.
