The White House was temporarily locked down after a car followed the official motorcade that was reportedly carrying the daughters of US President Barack Obama.
According to the Secret Service, the driver was taken into custody after the authorised vehicle was stopped inside the highly guarded area by uniformed officers.
The incident happened at around 4.40 pm local time yesterday when the US President was inside the White House having a scheduled meeting with Secretary of State John Kerry.
The driver, later identified as Mathew Evan Goldstein, 55, was arrested and charged with unlawful entry and was transported to city police for processing.
He is reported to be an employee of the Internal Revenue Services and had pass for the Treasury Building, which is near the White House.
