Replying to a debate on the performance of irrigation department, Water Resources Minister Sunil Tatkare said 10,56,000 hectares of area was brought under irrigation in the last ten years, an increase of 5.17 per cent.
Government spent Rs 42,400 crore on irrigation in this period, of which Rs 30,500 crore were spent on projects which were in progress at present, he added.
The NCP Minister stated that re-tendering of contracts would be done if there was a cost escalation of projects.
As to the allegations of amassing disproportionate assets against him, Tatkare dubbed them as "politically motivated", and said he would not mind the Economic Offences Wing verifying the documentary evidence produced by the opposition BJP.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who holds the finance portfolio, rejected the demand for a white paper on the state's economy, saying that his department functioned in a transparent manner.
The current debt of Maharashtra was Rs 2.28 lakh crore and the state was capable of repaying it, Pawar asserted.
