The system would lessen the hassles in getting the caste validity certificate, which is mandatory if one wants to get benefit of caste-based reservations in jobs or education institutes, etc. But there is opposition from within the bureaucracy.
"The clerks will not be involved in the new system, it would be similar to the system used in applying for passport. It would curb corrupt activities...There would be no scope for bribery," said an official from the Social Justice Department, on the condition of anonymity.
"The online system is currently working in Mumbai and suburbs on a pilot basis. However, we are aiming to implement it across the state in the next six months," official added.
Social Justice Minister Shivajirao Moghe had made the announcement on implementation of online system during the budget session of Maharashtra legislature this year.
