"Avatar" actress Zoe Saldana has responded to the buzz surrounding her husband's decision to take on her last name.
The 36-year-old actress revealed to InStyle Magazine this month that she had tried to talk her partner, Marco Perego, 36, out of taking her surname over fears he would be 'emasculated' by his Latin community of men.
While Marco, an Italian artist who married Saldana in 2013, replied that he didn't care, but it seemed the rest of the world did, as the couple's revelation has become a hot topic over the last few days, prompting her response on Facebook, reported Grazia Daily.
"Fathers, sons, brothers, men everywhere: Your legacy will not perish if you take your partner's surname, or she keeps hers. I've been made aware that a comment I made regarding my marriage has garnered some attention," Saldana posted on Facebook.
"I felt proud that my husband decided to take my last name as his own... And I his...He also asked me, 'Why not? What are you so afraid of?' And it made me wonder... What am I so afraid of? Why is it so surprising, shocking- eventful that a man would take his wife's surname? Women have never been asked if its ok for them to give up their names - why doesn't that make the news?
"... Let's start by letting go of some of the limitations we have inherited from the past, and forge a new path moving forward," Saldana added.
